23.10.2018 - WORKSHOPS WITH USERS OF THE PROJECT "FOR EACH ROMA TO HAVE A HOME"

Rad icoIntensive workshops with the beneficiaries of the project "For Each Roma to Have a Home" started in September 2018 and are still ongoing. The workshops are conducted by the local NGO Luna, with the support of the municipality of Odzaci and Housing Center. The aim of the workshops was to prepare Roma families for resettling into the newly built residential buildings and to help them to adapt to new living conditions as quickly as possible. The themes of the workshops are very different and broad - from general topics such as the importance of education, the harmfulness of child marriages, the identification of life patterns that negatively affect the process of emancipation and integration, to topics related to the way of keeping domestic animals, building harmonious relationships with neighbors, respecting house rules, storing the secondary raw materials, adequate use and maintenance of housing facilities and equipment, and such like. During the workshops, the beneficiaries had the opportunity to get acquainted with the housing units they would move into even before formal resettlement.

The workshops were started first in the Serbian language so that over time the participants could spontaneously pass on the Roma language. NGO Luna is a Roma non-governmental organization based in Bogojevo and its members are familiar with all project users, which was the added value of these workshops. The workshops took place in a good atmosphere and a nice mood, which contributed to their effect.

"My conclusion is that it is necessary to work intensively with them and, in a modern and cultural way, lead to a change of consciousness and behavioral habits. Time is definitely a key factor in this as well as the new environment we expect to learn from" said Jelica MIšković from NGO Luna, a workshop organizer. The users themselves are aware that they will need time to adapt to the new environment. The necessity of holding such workshops was confirmed and they were planned to continue in the following period.

The Project “For Each Roma to Have a Home” is financed by the Europan Union, co-financed by the Government of the Republic of Serbia and Municipality of Odžaci and is implmented by Housing Center in partnership with municipality of Odžaci.
