10.11.2018 – NEEDS ASSESSMENT IN TWO INFORMAL SETTLEMENTS IN BELGRADE

Giz icoHousing Center commenced the implementation of the project "Needs Assessment in Two Informal Settlements in Belgrade" financed by GIZ. The project is being implemented in Roma settlements Antena in New Belgrade and Lazari on Mirijevo hill in Zvezdara municipality. The main objective of the project is to develop possible options for fulfilling the right to adequate housing in two settlements. The needs assessment and the developed options will serve as a basis for deciding on the strategy for sustainable housing solutions. Both settlements are currently benefiting from the GIZ measure “Basic Supply of drinking water and sanitary services for informal settlements in Belgrade”, implemented in cooperation with the City of Belgrade. The project contributes to a plan for the transformation of the current situation of Roma settlements to a more sustainable inclusion.

In addition to providing technical information on settlements and buildings and data on the social profile of inhabitants, their needs and wishes, the assessment will provide recommendations for future settlement regulation and development. Recommendations will help local government to have a clear picture of the situation in both settlements as well as to develop plans for their further improvements, including legalization in situations where it is possible or moving to other locations where necessary.

Housing Center has developed a methodology of the assessment, and together with interested stakeholders drafted a questionnaire that the team of interviewers completes in a moment. At the same time, the Housing Center architects will investigate whether, and under what conditions, settlements or individual objects can be kept in current locations. The duration of the project is two months, that is, until January 15, 2019.
