15.10.2018 - SUCCESSFUL BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL YEAR FOR ADULTS FROM THE SUBSTANDARD NEW SETTLEMENT

Oo icoWe are very proud that 30 beneficiaries of the project "For Each Roma to Have a Home", implemented by Housing Center and the municipality of Odžaci, have enrolled in a program for adult education. The campaign implemented by Housing Center and the School for Elementary Education of Adults Sombor, Municipality of Odžaci and the local NGO "MR Luna", with support of GIZ  was successful - the school year has begun productively, with a great response from the residents of the New Settlement.

Given the high social vulnerability of Roma individuals living in segregated and sub-standard settlement, the School for Elementary Education of Adults Sombor has tailored its classes in line with the needs of students, thus the classes are held in the afternoon hours with a bus coming to the settlement as to securely drive the students to the school. Among the students there is a high number of mothers with children who are jointly attending the classes. However, the solution was found - while mothers are in classes, the children are also in the classroom but under supervision of professional pedagogue and teachers of the school. The bus transport to and from the school is financially supported by GIZ.

A New Settlement near Bogojevo in the municipality of Odžaci is a substandard and segregated settlement, with 107 inhabitants (34 households), of which 40 are minor aged children. The households are going to be relocated to new housing units built by Housing Center. The facilities were built with the funds of the project "For Each Roma to Have a Home" funded by the European Union and the Government of Serbia. Due to segregation and spatial exclusion, as many as 73% of adult inhabitants of this settlement are illiterate. We believe that education, with adequate housing conditions, will play an important role in creating conditions for a better life.
